Louis-Philippe, King of France, 1830. Artist: Thomson

Louis-Philippe, King of France, 1830. Louis Philippe (1773-1850) was proclaimed king in 1830 after the overthrow of the repressive regime of Charles X by the July Revolution. Ruling as King of the French rather than of France, he attempted to establish a monarchy more in touch with the people than previously. Louis Philippes rule was initially popular, but his regime increasingly came to be regarded as conservative and favouring the wealthy. In 1848 the people revolted again and Louis Philippe abdicated and fled to England. His overthrow brought an end to the monarchy in France

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Louis-Philippe, the King of France in 1830. Painted by Thomson, this portrait showcases the monarch's regal presence and military attire. Louis-Philippe ascended to the throne after the oppressive reign of Charles X was overthrown during the July Revolution. Unlike his predecessors, he aimed to establish a monarchy that connected with its people on a deeper level. Initially popular among his subjects, Louis-Philippe's rule gradually became associated with conservatism and favoritism towards the wealthy. This perception led to another uprising in 1848, prompting him to abdicate and seek refuge in England. His downfall marked an end to monarchy in France. The image portrays Louis-Philippe as a powerful figure donning a sash and adorned with epaulettes on his military uniform. The engraving emphasizes his status as both ruler and warrior, symbolizing authority and strength. As we gaze upon this nineteenth-century masterpiece from Gerard's collection at The Print Collector, we are transported back in time to witness a pivotal moment in French history. Through this photograph, we can reflect upon the complexities of power dynamics within society while appreciating the artistry behind capturing such historical significance.
