Lord Naas, M.P. for Kildare, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Lord Naas, M.P. for Kildare, 1850. Portrait from a photograph by Kilburn of Irish politician Richard Southwell Bourke. At the general election in 1847, in conjunction with the Marquis of Kildare, he contested the county [Kildare], on Protectionist and Conservative principles, against John Augustus O'Neil, and was returned, after a severe contest...At the subsequent general election, the tables were so completely turned against him, that his carriage, under the supposition of his being in it, was thrown over one of the bridges. He, however, escaped, and by 1847 having changed both his religious and political faith, appeared as a Radical, Repeal, and Roman Catholic candidate for Kildare'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photographic portrait captures Lord Naas, M.P. for Kildare, in the year 1850. The identity of the photographer is unknown, but the image was produced by Kilburn, a renowned Victorian-era photographer. Lord Naas, whose birth name was Richard Southwell Bourke, played a significant role in the political landscape of Kildare, Ireland, during the mid-19th century. In the general election of 1847, Lord Naas, in alliance with the Marquis of Kildare, contested the county of Kildare on Protectionist and Conservative principles against John Augustus O'Neil. Despite a fierce contest, Lord Naas emerged victorious. However, the political tides shifted dramatically in the subsequent election, and Lord Naas' carriage was mistakenly targeted and thrown over a bridge. Remarkably, he managed to escape unscathed. By 1847, Lord Naas had undergone a transformation, both in his religious and political beliefs. He reemerged as a Radical, Repeal, and Roman Catholic candidate for Kildare. This intriguing portrait, published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, offers a glimpse into the tumultuous political climate of the time and the resilience of Lord Naas in the face of adversity. The photograph, with its striking contrasts and intricate details, is a testament to the artistry of William Edward Kilburn and the historical significance of the subject. This image, a product of the 19th century, continues to intrigue and fascinate us today, offering a window into the past and the complexities of Victorian-era politics.
