EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the commanding presence of Lord Kitchener of Khartum, a renowned British soldier and statesman. Taken by Elliott & Fry in 1901, the portrait showcases Earl Kitchener's stern yet dignified expression. Born Herbert Kitchener in Ireland in 1850, he played a pivotal role in regaining Sudan for Egypt through his victory at the Battle of Omdurman in 1898. Lord Kitchener's military prowess extended to his command of British forces during the Boer War from 1899 to 1902. His strategic brilliance earned him recognition as a field marshal and later as War Minister from 1914 until his untimely death in 1916. The image depicted here became iconic during World War I when it was used on an army recruitment poster, symbolizing strength and determination. However, tragedy struck when Lord Kitchener drowned aboard HMS Hampshire after it hit a German mine while en route to Russia. This photograph is part of "The Life and Deeds of Earl Roberts" series by J. Maclaren Cobban published in Edinburgh in 1901. It serves as a lasting tribute to one of Britain's most influential military figures who dedicated his life to serving his country with unwavering loyalty and courage.
