The London Orphan Asylum at Clapton, 1862. Creator: Unknown
The London Orphan Asylum at Clapton, [East London], 1862. Dr. Reed...conceived the idea of an asylum for orphans, which was founded in 1813...the present spacious range of buildings...was raised upon the beautiful site at Lower Clapton in the year 1823...The objects for which the asylum was raised were these: to maintain, clothe, and educate fatherless children, respectably descended but destitute of support, between the ages of seven and fifteen, without reference to sex or locality. The report in 1821 shows that 109 boys and girls were thus cared for. The present report shows that the permanent number on the establishment is 400. Since its opening 2712 children have been admitted to the London Orphan Asylum, while 2300 well trained for the business of life have issued from its walls. Situations have been found by the board of managers in the leading offices and warehouses in the City for the boys, and for the girls engagements in schools and the higher branches of domestic service. Beyond this for some years a fraternal influence is retained over the ex-pupils, who are encouraged to return each returning year with a good character from their employers in the hope of obtaining a pecuniary reward offered to such as behave well'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1862, showcases The London Orphan Asylum at Clapton, located in East London. Established in 1813 by Dr. Reed, the asylum was initially founded to provide care, clothing, and education for fatherless children between the ages of seven and fifteen, regardless of sex or locality. The current spacious buildings, which can be seen in the image, were erected on the beautiful Lower Clapton site in 1823. The asylum's mission was to prepare these children for independent living, and the 1821 report indicates that 109 boys and girls were being cared for at that time. By 1862, the permanent number had grown to 400. Over the years, the asylum had made a significant impact, with a total of 2712 children having been admitted since its inception. Upon completion of their education, the children were assisted in securing employment. Boys were placed in leading offices and warehouses in the City, while girls were employed in schools and the higher branches of domestic service. The asylum continued to exert a fraternal influence over its former pupils, encouraging them to return annually with a good character from their employers in the hope of receiving a reward. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the vital role The London Orphan Asylum played in shaping the lives of countless children in need during the 19th century.
