EDITORS COMMENTS
The Lodging of Bonaparte at Valence, 1896 captures a glimpse into the life of Napoleon Bonaparte during his time in Valence. The four-story building on the left, with its heart-shaped tavern sign, was the residence kept by Mlle. Bou and served as Bonaparte's lodging. To the right stands another significant structure known today as Maison des Tetes, which housed a printing-house and reading-room frequently visited by Bonaparte in 1791. This engraving is based on an old lithograph and comes from 'Life of Napoleon Bonaparte' written by William Milligan Sloane in 1896. It transports us back to the 18th century, allowing us to witness firsthand where one of history's most influential figures resided and worked. The image showcases not only the architectural beauty of these buildings but also provides insight into Bonaparte's intellectual pursuits during his early years as he wrote his competitive essay for the Lyons Academy. This print serves as a testament to his ambition, intellect, and determination that would later propel him to become Emperor of France. As we gaze upon this monochrome scene, we are reminded of Napoleon's lasting legacy that shaped European history. It invites us to explore further into his life and accomplishments while appreciating the historical significance held within these walls.
