EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the majestic Lincoln Cathedral, a symbol of religious and architectural grandeur. Built in 1072 under the orders of William the Conqueror, this magnificent structure stands tall in Lincolnshire, England. The cathedral was originally constructed by Bishop Remigius and consecrated in 1092. Throughout its history, Lincoln Cathedral has faced numerous challenges. It endured damage from a fire in 1141 and an earthquake in 1185. Once adorned with spires on all three towers, tragedy struck when the central tower's spire collapsed in 1549 and was never replaced. In 1807, for safety reasons, it was decided to remove the spires from the two western towers depicted in this image. The photograph is based on an original work by Thomas Girtin (1775-1802), capturing the essence of this imposing Gothic masterpiece during the early twentieth century. Published as part of The Connoisseur Volume LX by Otto Limited London in 1921, it serves as a testament to both Girtin's artistry and the enduring allure of Lincoln Cathedral. With its intricate facade and towering presence against a clear blue sky, this print transports viewers back to a time when craftsmanship merged seamlessly with spirituality. It encapsulates not only architectural brilliance but also reflects upon centuries-old Christian traditions that have shaped communities around cathedrals like these throughout history.
