EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a significant historical artifact - a letter from Oliver Cromwell to William Lenthall, dated 14th June 1645. The artist himself, Oliver Cromwell, penned this letter on the very day of the Battle of Naseby, where the Parliamentary forces emerged victorious under the leadership of Sir Thomas Fairfax and with Cromwell commanding the right wing. The image captures not only the content but also the essence of this momentous correspondence. The vibrant colors bring life to Cromwell's distinctive handwriting, allowing us to appreciate his meticulous script as he announces King Charles I's defeat at Naseby. This facsimile provides an invaluable glimpse into one of England's most turbulent periods - the English Civil War in the seventeenth century. As we delve into history through this print, we witness how letters served as crucial means of communication during times of war and political upheaval. The signature at its conclusion bears witness to both power and authority held by these influential figures: Charles I as King of Great Britain and Ireland; Oliver Cromwell as Lord Protector; and William Lenthall serving in his capacity as Speaker for Parliament. Preserved within this image is not just a piece of paper but a testament to human triumphs and struggles that shaped our world today. It serves as a reminder that even amidst chaos and conflict, individuals like Cromwell sought to document their victories while laying foundations for future governance systems.
