EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures a pivotal moment in French political history: the high-profile trial of Joseph Caillaux for treason during the aftermath of World War I. The image, taken in 1920, shows Caillaux standing before the president of the Haute Cour de Justice in the Palais du Luxembourg, responding to interrogation. To his left, Vincent de Moro-Giafferi and Demange, two of his defense lawyers, are seated. Caillaux, a prominent French politician and journalist, was accused of defeatism and attempting to undermine the war effort through his articles during the early stages of the war. The trial, known as "le procès Caillaux," generated significant public interest and marked a turning point in French political life. The print, titled "Le defaitisme et les grands procès; le procès Caillaux; M Caillaux en Haute-Cour," is from the "Album de la Guerre 1914-1919, Volume 2" by L'Illustration, published in Paris in 1924.
