EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking black and white portrait captures the distinguished visage of the late Right Hon. Thomas Henry Sutton Sotheron-Estcourt, a prominent British political figure of the 19th century. The image, published in the Illustrated London News in 1876, showcases Sotheron-Estcourt's prominent sideburns, full beard, and neatly trimmed mustache, framed by his winged spectacles. Born and educated in Harrow and Oriel College, Oxford, Sotheron-Estcourt embarked on a successful political career, representing Marlborough (1829-1832), Devizes (1835-1844), and North Wiltshire (1844-1865) in the House of Commons. In 1858, he was sworn a Privy Councillor and appointed President of the Poor-Law Board. The following year, he became Secretary of State for the Home Department. The text notes his education, political offices, and appointments, emphasizing his significant contributions to British governance during the Victorian era. The portrait serves as a testament to his influential career and enduring legacy in British politics. The portrait's creation is attributed to an unknown artist or engraver, adding to its allure as a historical artifact.
