EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving is a tribute to the late General Sir Henry Taylor, G.C.B., who passed away in 1876 at the impressive age of 93. Sir Henry began his military career with the East India Company as early as 1798, serving as a lieutenant in the 10th Madras Native Infantry under Sir Arthur Wellesley in the Battle of Assaye in 1803. In 1832, he was promoted to the rank of brigadier-general, commanding the northern division of the Madras army for five years. During this period, he played a significant role in suppressing rebellions in the Vizagapatam, Kimmedy, and Ganjam districts, leading a force consisting of more than fifteen regiments. Sir Henry's military legacy is vast, as he fathered six sons who also served in the Indian army. Three of these sons are still alive, continuing their father's legacy. This portrait of Sir Henry Taylor was created by Maull and Co. from a photograph taken in 1876 and was published in the Illustrated London News. The image showcases the distinguished general in his later years, with a full beard and an air of authority. Sir Henry Taylor's life and military career are a testament to the British Raj's rich history and the enduring impact of the British Indian Army.
