Large scale, commercial agriculture, Salinas Valley, California, 1939. Creator: Dorothea Lange
Salinas Valley, California. Large scale, commercial agriculture. This single California county (Monterey) shipped 20, 096 carlots of lettuce in 1934, or forty-five percent of all carlot shipments in the United States. In the same year 73.8 percent of all United States carlot shipments were made from Monterey County, Imperial Valley, California (7, 797 carlots) and Maricopa County, Arizona (4, 697). Production of lettuce is largely in the hands of a comparatively small number of grower-shippers, many of whom operate in two or all three of these Counties. Labor is principally Mexican and Filipino in the fields, and white American in the packing sheds. Many workers follow the harvests from one valley to the other, since plantings are staggered to maintain a fairly even flow of lettuce to the Eastern market throughout the year

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "Salinas Valley, California. Large scale, commercial agriculture," was captured by renowned American photographer Dorothea Lange in 1939. The image offers a glimpse into the vast, arable lands of Monterey County, California, which at the time was the leading producer of lettuce in the United States. In 1934, Monterey County shipped an impressive 20,096 carloads of lettuce, accounting for nearly half of all lettuce shipments in the country. The production of lettuce was largely controlled by a small number of grower-shippers, many of whom operated in Monterey, Imperial Valley, California, and Maricopa County, Arizona. The labor force was predominantly Mexican and Filipino in the fields and white American in the packing sheds. Many workers followed the harvests from one valley to another due to the staggered plantings, ensuring a consistent supply of lettuce to Eastern markets throughout the year. The photograph captures the rural, rustic landscape of the Salinas Valley during the 1930s. The furrows in the foreground lead the viewer's eye towards the distant, rolling hills, where lettuce crops stretch as far as the eye can see. The image is a testament to the commercial agriculture that dominated the United States during this period, particularly during the Great Depression when the agricultural sector played a significant role in the country's economy. Dorothea Lange, a pioneering figure in documentary photography, captured this image as part of her work with the Farm Security Administration (FSA) and later the Office of War Information (OWI). Her photographs provide a valuable record of rural life during the 1930s and offer insights into the social and economic realities of the time.
