EDITORS COMMENTS
In the heart of Corfu, Greece, during the tumultuous year of 1916 in the First World War, the grand Achilleion Palace, once a tranquil retreat for Empress Elisabeth of Austria, was transformed into a military hospital. The palace, with its beautiful gardens cascading down from a small temple to the sea, was now under the protection of French Alpine soldiers. In this photograph by Robert Vaucher, titled "L'Achilleion, transformée en ambulance, est confiée à la garde de nos Alpins; allée en gradins descendant d'un petit temple jusqu'à la mer," we witness the poignant transformation of this once luxurious country house into a wartime medical facility. Soldiers can be seen in the foreground, their uniforms and equipment a stark contrast to the ornate architecture and lush greenery that surrounds them. The requisitioned palace, now a military hospital, stands as a testament to the harsh realities of war and the adaptability of its structures to serve new purposes. This photograph, part of the Collection de la Guerre IV in L'Illustration Tome CXLVII, offers a glimpse into the history of the First World War and the ways in which even the most beautiful buildings could be repurposed in times of conflict.
