King Edward VII, Prince Fushimi and staff, Aldershot command, 1908-1909. Before his accession to the throne in 1901, Edward (1841-1910) held the title of Prince of Wales, and has the distinction of having been heir apparent to the throne longer than anyone in English or British history. His reign saw the first official recognition of the office of the Prime Minister in 1905. He was the first British monarch of the House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, which was renamed by his son, George V, as the House of Windsor. From Penroses Pictorial Annual 1908-1909, An Illustrated Review of the Graphic Arts, volume 14, edited by William Gamble and published by AW Penrose (London, 1908-1909)
