EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the stern gaze of Judge Isaac C Parker, known as the Hanging Judge, during the late 19th century. Originally a Missouri congressman, Parker was appointed District Judge for the Western District of Arkansas in 1875 when lawlessness plagued the American West. Throughout his remarkable 21-year tenure on the bench, Judge Parker presided over an astonishing number of cases - more than 13,000 in total. Among these were a staggering 344 capital crimes that demanded justice. Unyielding in his pursuit of maintaining law and order, he sentenced an astounding 160 defendants to death by hanging. The image portrays a man dressed impeccably in a suit befitting his position of authority. Seated with an air of solemnity and determination, this portrait symbolizes not only one man's commitment to upholding justice but also serves as a metaphor for crime and punishment during this tumultuous era. Located within Arkansas' wild frontier at that time, Judge Isaac C Parker became synonymous with enforcing law amidst chaos. This historical photograph is taken from "Pictorial History of the Wild West" by James D Horan and Paul Sann published in London in 1954. As we reflect upon this powerful image today, it serves as a reminder of both our country's turbulent past and its unwavering dedication to maintaining order even under challenging circumstances.
