EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a portrait of Jean-Baptiste Jouvenet, a renowned French painter from the 17th century. Known for his religious subject matter, Jouvenet's talent was recognized by Le Brun, who employed him at the Salon de Mars in Versailles. This image is taken from "Biographical Illustrations" by Alfred Howard, published in 1830. Despite facing adversity towards the end of his life due to paralysis, Jouvenet continued to create art using his left hand. His determination and dexterity are evident in this direct gaze captured by the unknown creator of this print. The photo also provides a glimpse into the historical context surrounding Jouvenet's career. It showcases an engraving of him dressed in traditional clothing against the backdrop of a grand building, possibly alluding to Chateau de Versailles where he worked under Charles de La Fosse. This image not only pays homage to Jean-Baptiste Jouvenet's artistic legacy but also serves as a testament to his resilience and dedication as a court painter during that era.
