Joseph Lister (1827-1912), English surgeon and pioneer of antiseptic surgery, 1926
Joseph Lister (1827-1912), English surgeon and pioneer of antiseptic surgery, 1926. Lister made important discoveries on the microscopical investigations of inflammation and the coagulation of blood, but his pivotal role in medicine was introducing his antiseptic system in 1867. He used carbolic acid, a well known disinfectant, to soak his surgical gauzes and instruments. As a result, surgeons gained the ability to carry out complex surgery without patients developing fatal infections. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the esteemed figure of Joseph Lister, an English surgeon and pioneer of antiseptic surgery. Taken in 1926, this portrait showcases Lister's profound impact on the field of medicine during the 19th century. Lister's groundbreaking discoveries in microscopical investigations of inflammation and blood coagulation laid a solid foundation for his most significant contribution to medical science - the introduction of his revolutionary antiseptic system in 1867. Utilizing carbolic acid, a widely recognized disinfectant at that time, Lister soaked surgical gauzes and instruments to prevent fatal infections from developing in patients undergoing complex surgeries. The significance of Lister's work cannot be overstated; it transformed the landscape of surgical procedures by providing surgeons with newfound confidence to perform intricate operations without fear of infection-related complications. His pioneering efforts paved the way for modern surgical practices that prioritize cleanliness and hygiene. This remarkable photograph is sourced from "An Outline of Christianity: The Story of Our Civilization". Volume 4: Christianity and Modern Thought, edited by RG Parsons and AS Peake, published by the Waverley Book Club in London. It serves as a testament to Joseph Lister's enduring legacy as a trailblazer in medicine, whose contributions continue to save countless lives even today.
