EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of John Cabell Breckinridge, an influential American politician during the 19th century. Taken in the 1860s, this portrait showcases a man who played significant roles in both politics and war. Breckinridge began his career as a US Senator representing Kentucky before becoming the youngest Vice-President of the United States. Despite his political achievements, he faced defeat when running for President in the pivotal 1860 election. However, it was during the Civil War that Breckinridge truly left his mark. Serving as a general on both western and eastern fronts, he displayed strategic prowess and leadership skills. In recognition of these qualities, he was appointed Confederate Secretary of War in 1865. Fearing potential treason charges after the war's end, Breckinridge sought refuge abroad but eventually returned to America in 1869 under amnesty provisions. This image captures him at a moment when he had already experienced triumphs and setbacks throughout his eventful life. The black-and-white composition adds depth to this historical photograph while highlighting Breckinridge's strong features and determined expression. Preserved by renowned photographer Mathew Brady and featured in James D Horan's book "Historian with a Camera" this print serves as an enduring testament to one man's journey through tumultuous times in American history.
