The Italians turn things around; Bodies of Austrian soldiers killed by Italian fire.. 1917. Creator: Unknown

The Italians turn things around; Bodies of Austrian soldiers killed by Italian fire on the right bank of the Piave, which they had managed to cross on the morning of November 16, 1917, with a strategy: of the first enemy line presenting itself with raised arms as if to surrender, and men behind with grenades in their their pockets. At 8 o'clock in the morning of the 17th, the Italians had driven their adversaries back to the left bank who had made their last effort, 1917. From "L'Album de the 1914-1919 War, Volume 2" [L'Illustration, Paris, 1924]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This haunting photograph captures the aftermath of a pivotal moment in the Italian campaign during World War I. Taken on the right bank of the Piave River in November 1917, the image shows the bodies of Austrian soldiers who had been killed by Italian fire. The Italians had managed to cross the river on the morning of November 16, surprising their adversaries with a unique tactic. The first enemy line presented themselves with raised arms as if to surrender, only to reveal grenades hidden in their pockets. By 8 o'clock in the morning on November 17, the Italians had driven their adversaries back to the left bank, marking the last major Austrian offensive of the war. The tragic scene depicted in this photograph is a stark reminder of the brutal realities of warfare during this era. The image is from 'L'Album de la Guerre, Volume 2' published by L'Illustration in Paris in 1924.
