EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, titled 'Irish Watering-Places - Youghall, County Cork, 1854,' transports us back in time to the picturesque Irish coastal town of Youghal, nestled at the mouth of the River Blackwater in County Cork. The town, second in size to the famed city of Cork, is steeped in history, with its ancient origins dating back to pre-Christian times. Youghal, once known as Eo-chailie or the Yew Wood, is named after its position at the base of a low range of hills, which were once covered in indigenous forests of yew-trees. The town's rich history is reflected in its architectural gems, including its medieval walls and the 15th-century Chantry Bridge, which spans the River Blackwater. The enchanting scene depicted in this photograph is a testament to the beauty and charm of Youghal during the 19th century. The River Blackwater, a significant geographical feature, flows gracefully into the Atlantic Ocean, creating a stunning estuary that has long attracted visitors to this quaint Irish town. This image was published in the 'Illustrated London News' in 1854, offering a glimpse into the past and providing a window into the history and allure of Youghal, County Cork, in Ireland's beautiful Munster region.
