The International Exhibition: "The Auction - Last Day of the Sale", by G.B. O'Neil, 1862. Auction after a clergyman's death....the aged partner and his comely daughter, in the first bloom of womanhood, are left without the means of preserving the family treasures endeared by so many associations of affection...Already-although both are still in the deepest mourning - everything must be sold...Not one person in the room has a look or a care for the widow and the fatherless...Our auctioneer is the very type of his class - an arch-hypocrite, hard-featured, impassible, yet perfectly aware of everything going forward; extremely plausible, though a somewhat injured, ill-used, and unappreciated Individual - a fact which he condescends to forget in the intense preoccupation of his melancholy duty. We can almost hear him exclaiming, "Going! going! for the small sum of - ; going!-positively for the last time - going - going! gone!". From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
The International Exhibition: The Auction - Last Day of the Sale," a captivating painting by G.B. O'Neil, created in 1862, offers a poignant and intriguing glimpse into a pivotal moment in the lives of its characters. The scene unfolds at an auction house, where the last day of the sale is underway. The room is filled with an air of anticipation and urgency, as potential buyers scrutinize the various items up for grabs. At the center of the crowd, an aged man and his young daughter stand, their faces etched with sorrow. They have been left destitute following the death of a clergyman, and are now forced to sell their cherished family treasures. The atmosphere in the room is far from sympathetic. No one seems to care for the widow and the fatherless, as they watch the auctioneer, a hard-featured, impassive man, call out the bids. The artist, E. Skill, masterfully captures the auctioneer's dual nature – he is an arch-hypocrite, yet deeply aware of the gravity of the situation. His plausible demeanor belies the injury, ill-use, and unappreciation he has faced throughout his career. The auctioneer's intense preoccupation with his melancholic duty is palpable, and we can almost hear him exclaiming, "Going! going! for the small sum of - ; going!-positively for the last time - going - going! gone!" as the precious family heirlooms are sold off one by one. This powerful painting, with its intricate narrative and evocative details, offers a poignant commentary on the human condition, particularly in times of loss and adversity. The International Exhibition: The Auction - Last Day of the Sale, is a testament to the enduring power of art to capture the essence of life's most poignant moments.
