The International Exhibition - "Nameless and Friendless", by Miss Osborn, 1862. Engraving of a painting....the sad story of a poor orphan girl (still in her mourning dress) left to support herself and a dependent and helpless brother...Poor thing! she hoped...that her picture - her last, her best picture - upon which she has been expending strength and thought during many anxious days, perhaps months, might bring something to save her from starvation. She dreamed that, at all events, it might induce some kind friend to assist her. But we need not look at the picture to know its fate; that is too plainly visible in the smug, disingenuous face of the dealer behind the counter, as ignorant, probably, as he is satisfied with his own connoisseurship, elevating his eyebrows and stroking his chin in the accustomed depreciatory manner when there is anything to buy, and yet hardly deigning to look down upon the picture. How painful is the poor girl's look of sickening disappointment - what agony in the fingers nervously pulling at the string! This, however, is a mere mercenary brute; we see it in every feature of his ugly visage..."Nameless and Friendless, " God help thee!'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

The International Exhibition - Nameless and Friendless, by Miss Osborn, 1862,

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a poignant and thought-provoking image that tells a heart-wrenching story of an orphan girl's desperate attempt to sell her last and best painting to save herself and her brother from poverty. The engraving, created in 1862 and the creator unknown, depicts the girl in mourning attire, her sad and weary expression reflecting the heavy burden of responsibility she bears. The scene unfolds in a gallery or exhibition hall, where the girl, with hope in her eyes, approaches a dealer, who is portrayed as a smug and disingenuous figure. He examines the painting with a dismissive air, stroking his chin and raising his eyebrows in a mocking display of connoisseurship. His indifference and lack of compassion are palpable, leaving the girl with a look of sickening disappointment. Her fingers nervously tug at the string attached to the picture, a symbol of her last hope slipping away. The caption from the Illustrated London News, published in 1862, paints a vivid picture of the girl's plight, her dreams of salvation shattered by the dealer's callous indifference. The text highlights the stark contrast between the girl's vulnerability and the dealer's insensitivity, leaving the viewer with a sense of empathy and sadness. This powerful image serves as a reminder of the struggles faced by the marginalized and vulnerable members of society, and the indifference and cruelty they often encounter in their quest for survival. The identity of both the artist, Miss Osborn, and the dealer remain unknown, but their roles in this story continue to resonate with audiences, evoking emotions of compassion, sadness, and frustration.
