Interior of St. Peter's - the Pope at the Grand Altar, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Interior of St. Peter's - the Pope at the Grand Altar, 1850. Pius IX returns to Rome:..he was met by the Sacred College, who accompanied him up the nave to the altar of confession, on which the sacrament was exposed...he was seen to be weeping profusely, and appeared actually overpowered by his feelings...Kneeling before the altar, he remained some minutes absorbed in silent prayer...Thence he advanced to the well-known statue of St. Peter, and having devoutly kissed its foot, retired by a side door into the Vatican Palace...exhausted by the conflicting emotions of this most memorable day. "...the Roman people are essentally devoted to their Sovereign and the Supreme Pontiff; and the Catholic world will learn with satisfaction, that the head of the Church has happily re-entered the Eternal City...destined by Divine Providence as his seat". From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, taken from the Illustrated London News in 1850, depicts a pivotal moment in the history of the Catholic Church: the return of Pope Pius IX to Rome after a long exile. The Pope, who had been in Gaeta, Italy since 1849 due to the political upheaval in Rome, was met with a joyous welcome by the Roman people and the Sacred College. In the photo, the Pope is seen at the Grand Altar of St. Peter's Basilica, surrounded by the ornate Baroque architecture of the basilica. The baldacchino, designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, can be seen towering above the altar, its canopy adorned with intricate details. The Pope is shown kneeling before the altar, tears streaming down his face as he prays in silence. The atmosphere in the basilica is one of deep emotion and reverence. The congregation, a sea of men in robes and military uniforms, stands in awe of the momentous occasion. The Pope's return to Rome was a significant event not only for the Roman people but for the Catholic world as a whole. It marked the restoration of the papal authority in the Eternal City and symbolized the triumph of the Church over the political turmoil. The photo is a testament to the deep devotion of the Roman people to their Sovereign and the Supreme Pontiff. It is a glimpse into the past, a reminder of a time when religious and political events held immense significance for the world. The image, engraved in black and white, captures the grandeur and solemnity of the occasion, making it a valuable historical document.
