EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white lithograph, titled "Interior of a Shallow-Draft Cargo Vessel on the Lena River, 1856," is an exquisite work of art from the collection of albums documenting expeditions to Siberia and the Russian Far East, created by Ivan Dem'ianovich Bulychev. The image is taken from "Puteshestviye po Vostochnoy Sibiri I. Bulychova. Chast' 1-ya. Poyezdka v Kamchatku" (A journey across eastern Siberia: Part 1, Trip to Kamchatka), which consists of 64 finely drawn illustrations, mostly in color, bound together. Bulychev, a member of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society, meticulously captured the essence of life on the Lena River during the 1850s. In this particular illustration, we see the interior of a shallow-draft cargo vessel, with three men gathered around a desk, deep in conversation. The cabin is furnished with simple yet functional pieces, including a bed with bedchamber, a chair, and a table. The scene exudes an air of quiet efficiency, as the men go about their business on the river. The image offers a glimpse into the daily life of the people who navigated the waterways of Siberia and the Russian Far East during this era. The meeting of frontiers is evident in the diverse mix of people, landscapes, and geographical features depicted in Bulychev's work. This historic image, with its rich details and authenticity, is a testament to the heritage of art and the exploration of new territories in the 19th century.
