Interior of the Grand Opera-House, at Paris, 1854. Creator: Edmund Evans
Interior of the Grand Opera-House, at Paris, 1854. The aspect of the Salle on first entering strikes principally from its extreme gorgeousness and brilliancy. It seems one gigantic mass of gold... Supporting the roof on each side of the proscenium, and at the bend of the theatre on each side, are massive and gigantic columns, glittering with mirrors...the whole front of the house, when fully lit, flames with the brilliant metal; yet the effect is not so strong as to cast into the shade the interior of the boxes, or dim the beauty or the toilets of the ladies...The architect, to whose lot it fell to execute the re-embellishment, was [Monsieur] Visconti...The Opera opened for the present season with the "Favorita", Madame Stoltz performing the part of the heroine'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white print, created by English engraver Edmund Evans in 1854, showcases the breathtaking interior of the Grand Opera-House in Paris during its re-embellishment period. Upon entering, one is immediately struck by the extreme gorgeousness and brilliancy of the Salle. The roof, supported by massive and gigantic columns adorned with mirrors, seems to be one gigantic mass of gold. Yet, the interior of the boxes and the elegantly dressed ladies do not fade into the background, but rather complement the dazzling effect of the gold. The architect responsible for this architectural marvel was Monsieur Visconti. The Opera House opened for the present season with the performance of "The Favorita," with Madame Stoltz playing the heroine. This print, published in the "Illustrated London News," offers a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the 19th-century Paris Opera, a testament to the art, entertainment, and culture of the time. The print reveals the orchestra pit, the proscenium, and the balconies, all adorned with intricate decoration and ornate details. The chandelier, suspended from the ceiling, casts a warm and inviting glow over the audience, creating an atmosphere of anticipation and excitement for the performance. The print invites us to step inside and experience the magic of the Paris Opera, a true masterpiece of the 19th century.
