Interior of a Chukchi Hut, Northeast Coast of Asia, 19th century. One of 65 lithographs that were included in the volume of maps published after the round-the-world voyage of the corvette Seniavin commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I and carried out in 1826-29 under the command of Captain Fedor Litke (the Russian version of the name of Count Friedrich Lu¨tke, a Baltic German). The expedition began in Kronstadt (the main imperial Russian naval base near Saint Petersburg where Russian circumnavigations typically began and ended); it then traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white lithograph, titled "Interior of a Chukchi Hut, Northeast Coast of Asia," is an intriguing glimpse into the domestic life of the Chukchi people during the 19th century. The image is one of 65 lithographs that were published as part of a volume of maps following the historic round-the-world voyage of the Russian corvette Seniavin, led by Captain Fedor Litke (also known as Friedrich Benjamin von Lütke) between 1826 and 1829. The expedition, commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I, began in Kronstadt, Russia, and traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. This voyage was part of a series of scientific naval surveys undertaken by Russia in the first part of the 19th century. The lithograph, created by Alexander Postels and Godefroy Engelmann, depicts a crowded Chukchi hut with various members of the community going about their daily lives. The interior is communal, with women and children huddled around a central fire, while men and older girls prepare and cook food. The hut's design reflects the harsh climate and limited resources of the Arctic region, with animal hides used as walls and furs spread out for insulation. The lithograph offers a unique anthropological and ethnographic perspective, providing insights into the daily life and cultural practices of the indigenous Chukchi people. The image is a valuable heritage art piece that has been preserved and is now part of the collections at the Library of Congress.
