Inauguration of the Townhall, Newcastle-on-Tyne, 1858. Creator: Unknown

Inauguration of the Townhall, Newcastle-on-Tyne, 1858. The inauguration of the new public buildings in Nicholas-square, Newcastle, took place in the beginning of this month, in the form of several grand musical performances by the Sacred Harmonic and Choral Society of Newcastle...The floor of the Music Hall floor is supported by wrought-iron girders on cast-iron pillars and brackets...The roof is also constructed of wrought iron. The ceiling is divided into panels, and enriched with plaster-work. The hall is lighted in the daytime by ten Venetian windows on each side, and at night from the ceiling by sun-burners: at each alternate junction of the beam is fixed a sun-burner, in all ten in number, by Mr. Bradford, of Manchester, gas engineer: these "sun-lights" consist of rings of gas-jets terminating in ornamental bosses, that hang from the ceiling. The rarefaction of the atmosphere caused by the heat of the burners carries off the vitiated air to flues in the roof. The admission of fresh air is by perforated iron gratings, fixed under the front paneling of the side galleries...There is also a gallery at the north end. The hall will seat...in all 2400, exclusive of the orchestra...The organ in the gallery is a temporary one'. From "Illustrated London News", 1858

EDITORS COMMENTS
Witnessing the Grand Inauguration of Newcastle-on-Tyne's Town Hall in 1858: A Feast for the Eyes and Ears The inauguration of Newcastle-on-Tyne's magnificent Town Hall in 1858 was an event of great significance for the people of this historic English town. This photograph from the Illustrated London News transports us back in time, offering a glimpse into the grandeur and innovation of this new public building. The Music Hall, located in Nicholas-square, was inaugurated with several magnificent musical performances by the Sacred Harmonic and Choral Society of Newcastle. The architectural marvel boasts a unique design, with its floor supported by wrought-iron girders on cast-iron pillars and brackets. The roof, also constructed of wrought iron, is adorned with intricate plaster-work and is divided into panels. The hall is illuminated during the day by ten Venetian windows on each side and at night by ten 'sun-burners' suspended from the ceiling. These 'sun-lights' consist of rings of gas-jets terminating in ornamental bosses, which not only provide ample light but also carry off the vitiated air to flues in the roof. Perforated iron gratings under the side galleries allow the admission of fresh air. The Town Hall could accommodate an impressive 2400 people, excluding the orchestra. The organ in the gallery is a temporary one, hinting at the anticipation for the permanent installation. This photograph not only showcases the architectural brilliance of the Town Hall but also highlights the community's enthusiasm for music and celebration. The inauguration of the Town Hall marked a new era in Newcastle-on-Tyne's history, symbolizing progress, innovation, and the unity of its people. This photograph is a testament to the town's rich heritage and its commitment to creating beautiful and functional public spaces.
