A Human Sacrifice in a Morai, in Otaheite; in the presence of Captain Cook, c1773

A Human Sacrifice in a Morai, in Otaheite; in the presence of Captain Cook, c1773. Captain James Cook and his officers watching a group of Tahitians chanting as a man and some pigs are prepared for sacrifice on the island of Otaheite (Tahiti). This is one of the events witnessed by Cook, the famed navigator and hydrographer, during the second of his three exploratory voyages to the Pacific region in 1772-1775 when they crossed latitude 70 degrees - the furthest south then reached by Europeans. These voyages transformed our knowledge of the region. From Story of the British Nation, Volume III, Walter Hutchinson. [London, c1920s]

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "A Human Sacrifice in a Morai, in Otaheite; in the presence of Captain Cook, c1773" captures a significant moment during Captain James Cook's exploratory voyage to the Pacific region. In this image, Cook and his officers are seen observing a group of Tahitians engaged in a solemn ritual. The Tahitians chant as they prepare for a human sacrifice alongside several pigs. This event took place on the island of Otaheite (Tahiti) and showcases the exotic customs and practices of its native inhabitants. The exploration voyages led by Captain Cook greatly expanded our understanding of this region during the 18th century. The photograph highlights various elements such as nature with palm trees forming an idyllic backdrop, while men play musical instruments like drums. It also depicts warfare symbols with references to naval activities and sailors present at the scene. This monochrome image evokes both awe and curiosity about different cultures and their rituals.
