The Horns Tavern - A Historic Hub of Kennington's Community

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print takes us back to the year 1820, capturing the essence of The Horns Tavern in Kennington, south London. Serving as much more than just a pub, this iconic establishment acted as a vibrant meeting place for locals, hosting lectures and exhibitions that brought people together. With its roots deeply embedded in history, The Horns Tavern was not only a social hub but also held significant importance in the community. In the 18th century, it served as the venue for meetings of the Manor of Kennington court. Later on, it played an instrumental role in sporting history when Surrey Cricket Club was founded within its walls during the 19th century. Sadly, time took its toll on this cherished landmark. After being rebuilt in 1887 to meet changing needs and tastes, The Horns Tavern met an unfortunate fate when it was ultimately demolished during the tumultuous era of urban development in the 1960s. Preserved through this remarkable photograph from Old and New London: A Narrative of Its History, Its People And Its Places by Edward Walford (c1878), we are transported back to witness a slice of life from another time. This image serves as a poignant reminder of how places like The Horns Tavern have shaped communities throughout history - bringing people together under one roof while leaving behind lasting memories etched into their hearts forever.
