The Hon. F. Leveson-Gower, M.P. Seconder of the Address to Her Majesty, in the House... 1854. Creator: Smyth
The Hon. F. Leveson-Gower, M.P. Seconder of the Address to Her Majesty, in the House of Commons - from a drawing by Baugniet, 1854. British politician and autobiographer Edward Frederick Leveson-Gower. At the general election of 1852 he successfully contested Stoke-upon-Trent, which seat he still retains...Mr. Gower is of decidedly Liberal principles, a friend of reform, a consistent supporter of progress, and an uncompromising Free-trader. It is believed that on Tuesday he made his maiden speech, though he has been so long a member of the House; and he was somewhat rewarded for his patient study of the arena by his success on this occasion. He spoke exceedingly well; and the compliment paid to him by Mr. Disraeli was universally regarded as well deserved'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts The Hon. F. Leveson-Gower, M.P., as he seconds the Address to Her Majesty in the House of Commons during the year 1854. The image, based on a drawing by Charles Baugniet, showcases Edward Frederick Leveson-Gower in the midst of parliamentary proceedings, dressed in formal attire and exuding an air of confidence and authority. At the time of this photograph, Leveson-Gower had recently secured his seat as the Member of Parliament for Stoke-upon-Trent following the general election of 1852. Known for his liberal principles, commitment to reform, and unwavering support for free trade, Leveson-Gower was a respected figure in British politics. Despite his lengthy tenure as a member of the House of Commons, this was believed to be his maiden speech, and it was met with great acclaim. In fact, the esteemed politician and autobiographer was praised by none other than Benjamin Disraeli for his eloquence and insight during the address. The Illustrated London News reported that Leveson-Gower spoke exceptionally well, and his accomplishment on this occasion was widely regarded as well-deserved. This evocative print, produced by Smyth, offers a glimpse into the political landscape of 19th century Britain and the esteemed role of its parliamentarians. It serves as a testament to Leveson-Gower's dedication, skill, and the impact he made on the political arena.
