EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph, taken by renowned American photographer Dorothea Lange in 1938, captures a moment in the lives of a displaced family along Highway 1 in Muskogee County, Oklahoma. The scene depicts seven children and their eldest son's family, who were bound for Kingfisher, Oklahoma, and Lubbock, Texas, in search of work in the wheat and cotton industries, respectively. The father had previously been a blacksmith in Paris, Arkansas, but had become a tenant farmer due to the economic hardships of the Great Depression. With a determined look in their eyes, the family is seen hitchhiking in their worn-out automobile, a product of AC Cars Ltd. The family's journey was not a choice but a necessity, as they expressed their intention to better themselves in California, a place they would not return to Arkansas. Dorothea Lange, a photographer for the Farm Security Administration and later the Office of War Information, captured this poignant image during a time of forced displacement and migration in America. The photograph is a powerful reminder of the human spirit and resilience in the face of adversity.
