Hayle St Ives in the distance, c1860

Hayle St Ives in the distance, c1860. Scene on the West Cornwall Railway, later part of the Great Western Railway (GWR). The boom time for the harbour and effectively the birth of the town came in the first half of the 19th century when Hayle became synonymous with mining-related industries and, above all, Harveys. Harvey & Co. employed 1000 men and exported Cornish beam engines all over the world. Illustration after RT Pentreath for Views of Devonshire and Cornwall by Henry Besley. (Exeter, c1860)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the bustling town of Hayle St Ives in the mid-19th century. The scene showcases the remarkable growth and prosperity that came with the rise of mining-related industries, particularly Harveys, which employed a staggering 1000 men and exported Cornish beam engines worldwide. The image captures an era defined by industrial revolution and progress, as evidenced by the presence of a railway bridge and viaduct dominating the landscape. These engineering marvels symbolize not only advancements in transportation but also signify Hayle's importance as a hub for trade and manufacturing. As we gaze upon this historical snapshot, we are transported to a time when steam trains chugged along tracks connecting towns and cities across England. The buildings lining the riverbank stand tall, housing factories that hummed with activity, contributing to Hayle's economic boom. In this monochrome engraving, we witness both natural beauty - with an estuary stretching into the distance - alongside man-made structures that shaped this Victorian town. It is a testament to human ingenuity coexisting harmoniously with nature. Henry Besley's illustration for Views of Devonshire and Cornwall provides us with a glimpse into an important chapter in British history. It reminds us of how far we have come while honoring those who paved the way for progress during this transformative period.
