Hall of Childrey Down Manor-house, Berks. 1857. Creator: Unknown
Hall of Childrey Down Manor-house, Berks. 1857. Interior of...the remains of an eminent manor-house, belonging to the manor of Rampanes...in its last stage of occupation - engraved from a sketch taken almost immediately before its demolition. This includes a portion of the great hall of the mansion: its height was about forty feet, it had a gallery for minstrels, and a window of noble proportions; the walls have also been pierced with four other handsome but smaller windows...Besides the spacious hall fireplace, there were enriched chimneypieces in other apartments of the mansion, which denoted it to have been a fine specimen of English domestic architecture of the sixteenth century - the period at which the dining-parlour, or banqueting-room, and retiring-rooms, were added to the great hall or principal feature of the mansion'. This black and white image, hailing from the year 1857, showcases the remnants of Hall of Childrey Down Manor-house in Berkshire, England. Once an eminent manor-house belonging to the manor of Rampanes, the manor-house was in its final stages of occupation before its demolition. The interior of this magnificent structure is depicted in the photograph, featuring a portion of the great hall. The hall's height was approximately forty feet, boasting a gallery for minstrels and a window of noble proportions. The walls were pierced with four other elegant but smaller windows. Besides the spacious hall fireplace, there were enriched chimneypieces in other apartments of the mansion, which denoted it to be a fine specimen of English domestic architecture of the sixteenth century - the period at which the dining-parlour, or banqueting-room, and retiring-rooms were added to the great hall or principal feature of the mansion. This image, engraved from a sketch taken almost immediately before its demolition, offers a glimpse into the past, providing a window into the grandeur of a bygone era. The half-timbered structure, with its intricate beams and ceiling, is a testament to the architectural prowess of the 16th century. The manor-house, with its white and black color palette, stands as a reminder of the rich history and heritage of Britain. This evocative image was published in the Illustrated London News in 1857, offering a glimpse into the past for its readers. The manor-house, though now demolished, continues to live on through this beautiful black and white engraving.
