The gymnasium, Salamis, North Cyprus

The gymnasium, Salamis, North Cyprus. Archaeologists have found remains at Salamis dating back to the 11th century BC. Evidence of Phoenician and Assyrian settlement has been found and it later became the capital of a Greek city-state. In Roman times Salamis was an important city and most of the ruins that can be seen today, including the gymnasium, date from the Roman period. The statues were decapitated by Christians. The city was badly damaged by earthquakes in the 4th century and was eventually abandoned after it was sacked in the 649 during the Arab invasion of Cyprus

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the grandeur of the gymnasium in Salamis, North Cyprus. Steeped in history, this ancient site has revealed remarkable remains dating back to the 11th century BC. As archaeologists excavated the area, evidence of Phoenician and Assyrian settlements emerged, shedding light on its rich past. Later on, Salamis became a thriving Greek city-state and an important Roman city during its heyday. The ruins that stand today are predominantly from the Roman period when Salamis flourished as a cultural hub. However, a somber reminder of religious conflict can be seen through the decapitated statues scattered throughout the site - an act carried out by Christians at some point in history. Tragically, natural disasters took their toll on this once-glorious city. In the 4th century AD, destructive earthquakes ravaged Salamis before it faced further devastation during the Arab invasion of Cyprus in 649 AD. Eventually abandoned due to these hardships, Salamis now stands as a testament to both human resilience and fleeting empires. As you gaze upon this image with its vibrant colors and towering columns, let your imagination transport you back through time to witness life within these walls. The gymnasium whispers stories of athletic prowess and intellectual pursuits that once echoed through its halls – tales lost but not forgotten amidst these captivating ruins.
