EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the grandeur of the Crystal Palace at Sydenham in south London. Designed by Joseph Paxton for the Great Exhibition of 1851, this architectural marvel was later relocated from Hyde Park to Sydenham. The image, taken around 1935 by Donald McLeish, showcases the intricate glass and girders that adorned the palace. The Crystal Palace served as a hub for numerous exhibitions and displays throughout its existence. However, tragedy struck on the night of November 30th, 1936 when a devastating fire reduced this magnificent structure to ashes. Featured in "Wonderful London, Volume 3" edited by St. John Adcock, this photograph offers a glimpse into an era long gone. Its monochrome aesthetic adds a timeless quality to the scene while highlighting every detail of the glass and metal framework. As one gazes upon this image, they are transported back to Victorian England when tourists flocked to witness this extraordinary tourist attraction. The Crystal Palace stood not only as a symbol of technological progress but also as a testament to human creativity and ingenuity. Though no longer standing today, its legacy lives on through photographs like these – reminders of an architectural masterpiece lost but never forgotten.
