EDITORS COMMENTS
Gilaki Around the Bay of De-Kastri, 1865-1871: A Window into the Past This evocative photograph, captured by the skilled lens of V.V. Lanin, offers a rare glimpse into the lives of the Gilaki people around the Bay of De-Kastri in the late 19th century. The image, part of a larger collection of 154 photographs presented to the Imperial Public Library of St. Petersburg by merchant V.P. Myl'nikov upon his return from the Amur region, provides valuable insights into the indigenous culture, fashion, and daily life of this community. The Gilaki, also known as the Nivkh, are an indigenous people inhabiting the southern coast of the Sea of Okhotsk and the Amur River basin in what is now Russia's Khabarovsk Kray. In this photograph, three Gilaki individuals, two men and one woman, are seen dressed in traditional clothing, each with a direct gaze that seems to invite the viewer into their world. The man on the left wears a long, fur-trimmed coat and a distinctive hat, while the second man dons a simple tunic and trousers, both adorned with intricate patterns. The woman, dressed in a long, flowing skirt and a fur hat, holds a child in her arms. The group's attire, reflecting their connection to the land and the elements, underscores the rich heritage and cultural significance of the Gilaki people. The photograph, taken between 1865 and 1871, is a testament to the meeting of frontiers and the protection of indigenous peoples' heritage. Lanin's masterful composition and the subjects' unwavering gaze create a powerful connection between the past and the present, inviting us to learn more about this fascinating culture and the history of the Far East.
