The German Hospital and grounds, 1845. Creator: Unknown
The German Hospital and grounds, 1845. Garden front of the...excellent Institution for the reception of the German sick poor...situated in the healthy suburb of Dalston [London], consisting of a large building, and several acres of gardens and pleasure grounds, which is an excellent provision for the use and recreation of convalescents. The aims of the hospital were:first, to give relief in case of illness to as many as possible of their own poor and indigent countrymen, of whom there were no less than 20, 000 to 25, 000, industrious in their habits, and unexceptionable as to their general conduct, living in this metropolis; and, secondly, to offer a limited number of rooms with somewhat superior accommodations to such as were able to pay for their maintenance, and yet did not possess homes where they could obtain the comforts they required in periods of illness. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the German Hospital and its expansive grounds in 1845. The hospital, located in the healthy suburb of Dalston in London, was a remarkable institution dedicated to providing care for the German sick poor. With a large building surrounded by several acres of gardens and pleasure grounds, it offered an excellent provision for both medical treatment and recreation for convalescents. The hospital had two primary objectives: firstly, to offer relief to their own impoverished countrymen living in London, estimated to be between 20,000 and 25,000 individuals who were hardworking and well-behaved; secondly, to provide comfortable accommodations for those who could afford it but lacked suitable homes where they could receive necessary comforts during periods of illness. This engraving from "Illustrated London News" captures the grandeur of this Victorian-era architectural marvel. Its elegant design stands as a testament to the commitment towards healthcare during that time. The image portrays not only the impressive exterior of the building but also highlights its picturesque surroundings with meticulously maintained gardens. As we gaze upon this historic photograph today, we are transported back in time to witness an exceptional establishment that catered compassionately to those most vulnerable within society. It serves as a reminder of how far our healthcare system has come while inspiring us with its dedication towards providing quality care amidst beautiful surroundings.
