EDITORS COMMENTS

This print captures a poignant moment frozen in time. The image showcases George Dacres Patterson, a young boy of six, standing beside his mother Eleanor Dacres Patterson. The year is 1815, just two years after George's birth and seven months after the tragic death of his father at the Battle of Vittoria. In this intimate portrait, George stands tall with an air of maturity beyond his tender age. His direct gaze reveals a sense of resilience inherited from his late father, Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Patterson. Clad in a military-style outfit reminiscent of his father's regiment, he embodies both strength and vulnerability. Eleanor stands by her son's side with her arm lovingly draped around him, radiating maternal warmth and pride. Her elegant dress speaks to her refined British upbringing while also symbolizing the challenges she faced as a widow raising her only child alone. The artist Andrew Plimer skillfully captured this heartfelt moment through his miniature painting technique. This print was later featured in The Connoisseur magazine in 1911, showcasing its enduring significance even decades later. Through this photograph, we glimpse into the lives of these remarkable individuals who navigated loss and hardship during early 19th-century Britain. It serves as a testament to their resilience as they forge ahead on their journey together - motherhood shaping young George into the man he would become despite life's adversities.
