General View of the Great Wall of China, from the Sea, 1850. Creator: Unknown
General View of the Great Wall of China, from the Sea, 1850. This stupendous work of human labour has its eastern termination on the shore of the Gulf of Leotong, about 120 miles north of the Peiho...Viewed from the water, the terminus appears to consist of a fortress some 300 yards in length, having a large gateway in the southern face, close outside of which, and between it and the sea, is a permanent joss-house, or temple, while the northern end is surmounted by a modern two-storied guardhouse; immediately beneath, the Wall projects seaward...[we] were civilly received by a white-buttoned mandarin and a small party of soldiers, who informed us we were perfectly at liberty to inspect the Wall at our leisure...'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This breathtaking photograph, taken from the sea in 1850, captures the awe-inspiring sight of the Great Wall of China as it meets the coastline. The image, published in the Illustrated London News, shows the eastern terminus of this magnificent structure, which is located about 120 miles north of the Peiho River. The wall appears to end in a fortress, approximately 300 yards long, with a large gateway in the southern face. A temple or joss-house stands between the gateway and the sea, while a modern two-storied guardhouse tops the northern end. The photograph offers a unique perspective of the Great Wall, which was not only a defensive structure but also a marvel of engineering and human labor. The wall stretches over 13,000 miles and was built to protect China from invasions. The photograph was taken during the Victorian era, a time when travel and exploration were becoming increasingly popular. The image would have captured the imagination of the British public, who were fascinated by the exoticism of China and its wonders. The photograph was taken from a ship, and the photographers were warmly welcomed by a mandarin and a group of soldiers. They were granted permission to explore the wall at their leisure, providing a rare opportunity to document this historic site. This photograph is a testament to the enduring allure of the Great Wall of China and the fascination it holds for people around the world. It is a reminder of the rich history and cultural heritage that exists beyond our borders and the importance of preserving it for future generations.
