General Sir Frederick Roberts, 1893. Sir Frederick, 1st Earl Roberts (1832-1914) was one of the foremost British military figures of Victorian times. Painted by W Roffe in 1893, the portrait captures the essence of this distinguished man who played a significant role in various historical events. Sir Frederick Roberts earned his reputation through his remarkable actions during the Indian Mutiny, for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross in 1858. However, it was his march to capture Kandahar during the Second Afghan War that truly solidified his legacy. This campaign led to him being made Baron of Kandahar and Waterford in 1892 and promoted to Field Marshal in 1895. In addition to his achievements on foreign soil, Roberts also commanded reinforcements sent to South Africa during the Boer War after initial setbacks. His successful intervention there propelled him back home as Commander-in-Chief of the British Army until his retirement from active duty in 1904. The engraving from James Taylors' "The Age We Live In: A History of the Nineteenth Century" beautifully immortalizes General Sir Frederick Roberts' stern yet dignified countenance. The image highlights not only his military uniform adorned with medals but also emphasizes his distinctive mustache. As we gaze upon this print, we are reminded of Lord Roberts' unwavering dedication and service to Britain's colonial endeavors throughout the late nineteenth century.
