General Piet Joubert (1831-1900) and staff, late 19th century (1935). Joubert was a South African general who opposed British annexation of the Transvaal region in 1877 and proclaimed its independence in 1880. He led the Boer forces in the first South African war against the British (1880-1881), defeated Sir Leander Starr Jameson in 1896 and retired at the start of the Boer War (1899-1902).
