Funchal, Madeira, 1857. Creator: Unknown
Funchal, Madeira, 1857. Lying at the very base of the hills, and having a southern aspect, the city stretches itself along the margin of the bay...the houses, rising as they recede from the shore, are brilliantly white. Many of them run up to a great height above their bases, to afford the merchants a lookout over the bay. The governor's residence is a large but plain structure...Of the forts, the largest occupies a commanding position on a height behind the city, overlooking the convent of Santa Clara...Between Brazen Head and Cruz Point, its two extremities, about five miles and a half apart, the line of coast forms an easy curve inwards to the depth of about three-quarters of a mile. The cliffs...are high and of a sombre colour. They look sternly down upon the ocean, and seem to throw glances of defiance on the waves as they rush to their feet and strive to undermine them'. EDITORS COMMENTS
Funchal, Madeira, 1857: A Scenic View of the Harbor and City This black and white image, taken from the Illustrated London News in 1857, showcases the picturesque harbor and city of Funchal, Madeira, Portugal. Lying at the base of the hills with a southern aspect, the city stretches along the bay, its brilliantly white houses rising above their bases to offer merchants a commanding view. The governor's residence, a large but plain structure, can be seen in the foreground. Protecting the city are several forts, with the largest occupying a commanding position on a height behind the city, overlooking the Convent of Santa Clara. The coastline, forming an easy curve inwards, is approximately five miles and a half long, with cliffs that are high and of a somber color. These imposing cliffs, with their stern and defiant appearance, seem to challenge the waves as they crash against the shore. The line of coast between Brazen Head and Cruz Point is marked by sailboats and other boats, adding to the bustling activity of the harbor. Funchal was a significant trade center in the 19th century, with boats transporting goods from the island to Britain and other European countries. The print, created through the wood engraving process, offers a glimpse into the geography and history of this beautiful and historic port city.
