French troops at rest, Verdun, France, 1916

French troops at rest, Verdun, France, 1916. The Battle of Verdun was the longest and one of the bloodiest of the First World War. The Germans began their offensive on 21 February 1916. The strategic objective of their commander, Erich von Falkenhayn was to bleed the French Army white by committing them to a battle of attrition in a sector of the front they would be compelled to defend at all costs. Falkenhayns grim logic was that with a population twice that of France, Germany could afford to lose two men to every one Frenchman, thus forcing them out of the war. After early successes with the French caught by surprise and with inadequate numbers of troops and artillery, the German advance was gradually halted by desperate counter-attacks. By 11 December the Germans had retreated to their original positions. Casualties were appalling; 434, 000 Germans and 550, 000 on the French side

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a poignant moment in history - French troops at rest during the Battle of Verdun in 1916. The Battle of Verdun was not only the longest but also one of the bloodiest battles of World War I. In an attempt to bleed the French Army white, German forces launched an offensive on February 21st, with their commander Erich von Falkenhayn aiming to engage them in a battle of attrition. Initially caught off guard and outnumbered, the French soldiers faced immense challenges as they fought desperately to defend their positions. However, through courageous counter-attacks and sheer determination, they gradually halted the German advance and eventually forced them to retreat by December 11th. The casualties suffered during this battle were truly horrifying, with over 434,000 Germans and 550,000 French soldiers losing their lives. This devastating loss highlights both the brutality and sacrifice endured by those who fought on these war-torn fields. In this photograph, we witness a brief respite for these exhausted soldiers as they find solace amidst unimaginable chaos. Their weary faces reflect both physical exhaustion and emotional strain - reminders of the toll that war takes on individuals and nations alike. As we gaze upon this image from a century ago, let us remember those who bravely served their countries during World War I. May it serve as a reminder that peace is precious and should never be taken for granted.
