Fragments of the Black Friars Monastery, preserved at the office of "The Times", 1856. The Church of the Black Friars immediately adjoined the site of the theatre [Playhouse-yard, in the City of London]; for a plinth and foundation of one of the buttresses of the church have, according to the Builder, "been brought to light after being buried 300 years; to turn up in such a position, too - in the midst of the printing-house of the Times newspaper. The plinth stands on a mass of ragstone and chalk, six feet high...It is interesting to reflect on this remnant of the Medieval Church, grown round and pressed out of sight by the most wonderful and momentous result of intelligence organisation, and capital in the world'. From "Illustrated London News", 1856

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, fragments of the once grand Black Friars Monastery are preserved at the office of "The Times" in London, 1856. The exact creator of this image remains unknown. The Black Friars Monastery, also known as the Dominican Priory, was a significant religious institution located in the heart of the City of London. It was situated adjacent to the site of the Playhouse-yard, and remnants of the monastery, including a plinth and foundation of one of its buttresses, were unearthed during construction work in the area. The discovery of these medieval relics in the midst of the bustling printing house of "The Times" is a striking reminder of the rich history that lies beneath the modern cityscape. The plinth, standing six feet high and made of ragstone and chalk, is a testament to the monastery's past glory. The discovery was reported in the "Illustrated London News" in 1856, which described the scene as "it is interesting to reflect on this remnant of the Medieval Church, grown round and pressed out of sight by the most wonderful and momentous result of intelligence organisation, and capital in the world." The monastery, which was founded in the 13th century, was dissolved during the Reformation in 1538, and its buildings were largely demolished. The discovery of these fragments offers a rare glimpse into the past, providing a tangible connection to the history of the area and the city as a whole. The image captures the intriguing juxtaposition of the old and the new, the medieval and the modern, and serves as a reminder of the ever-changing nature of the city and the importance of preserving its history.
