Fox-hunting, 1854. Creator: Unknown
Fox-hunting, 1854....an average provincial scene, with more sport and fun than fashion. We should say that Reynard has been dodging them round a big wood for an hour or two, until the whole field hasbecome thoroughly impatient; and, on the welcome sounds of "Tallo-ho-away !" a good many are dashing out of the cover and over the post and rails-the gate is locked-at a pace too good to last. The boy on the pony is making tremendous play, and means to go while he can. The young lady, on the other hand, has enjoyed the morning ride to cover, and the excitement and music of the find, and the repeated ringing of the fox round the big wood; she will now discreetly leave her father and brothers to ride to the hounds, and return under charge of the old groom who brought up papa's hunter'. Fox-hunting, 1854
EDITORS COMMENTS
is an enchanting and evocative black and white print depicting a quintessential British scene of fox hunting. The image captures the excitement and energy of the hunt, as a group of riders, including a young lady on a pony, dash out of a wooded area in pursuit of the elusive fox. The huntsmen, dressed in traditional red coats and tall hats, lead their foxhounds, who are eagerly following the scent of their quarry. The scene is reminiscent of an "average provincial scene, with more sport and fun than fashion," as described in the "Illustrated London News" article from which this print was taken. Reynard, the fox, has been evading the hunters for hours, and the field has grown impatient. The sound of the huntsmen's cry, "Tallo-ho-away!" signals the start of the chase, and several riders are seen making a desperate attempt to catch up. The young lady on the pony, however, seems to have had her fill of the excitement and decides to make her way back to the safety of the farmstead. She will be accompanied by the old groom, who brought up her father's horse. The print beautifully captures the rural charm and tradition of fox hunting in 19th century Britain, with its stunning depiction of the countryside, horses, and hounds. This print is a testament to the enduring appeal of the sport and the rich heritage it represents.
