Figures prepared by Baron von Hess for a painted window in Glasgow Cathedral: Jeremiah, 1862. Creator: Unknown

Figures prepared by Baron von Hess for a painted window in Glasgow Cathedral: Jeremiah, 1862. This great work of embellishing a national monument, the first of its kind that has been undertaken under the auspices of the Church of Scotland, affords a remarkable proof of the change which may be wrought in an ecclesiastical body by the tendency and inclination of the age. No longer the stern discourager of pictorial art, the Church of Scotland, has here shown herself to be its enlightened patron; for though, in conformity with her fundamental principles, rejecting obsolete quaintnesses and allusions, and having no respect for those mediaeval influences by which, south of the Tweed, "church art" seems hopelessly oppressed, she has placed before us representations intelligible to all alike, and from which the most refined and cultivated, taste may derive pleasure and instruction...The character of the draperies is borrowed from the Italian school, the folds being kept small, according to the proper treatment of drapery in glass. The ornament is in the mediaeval German style, and sufficiently accords with the architecture as not to farm any unpleasant contrast with it'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning photograph captures the intricate details of Figures prepared by Baron von Hess for a painted window in Glasgow Cathedral, depicting the Old Testament prophet Jeremiah from 1862. The identity of the photographer is unknown, but the figures were created under the auspices of the Church of Scotland, marking a significant shift in the Church's attitude towards pictorial art. In the past, the Church of Scotland had been criticized for discouraging art in its places of worship. However, with the changing times, the Church embraced the arts and became an enlightened patron. This window, the first of its kind in Scotland, showcases the Church's rejection of obsolete quaintnesses and mediaeval influences that had long oppressed church art in the south of Tweed. The figures of Jeremiah and his companions are dressed in Italian-style draperies, with small folds that are appropriate for glass. The ornamentation is in the mediaeval German style, which harmoniously blends with the architecture of the cathedral and avoids any unpleasant contrast. This great work of embellishment in a national monument represents a remarkable proof of the Church's transformation and its openness to the arts. The figures are not only intelligible to all but also provide pleasure and instruction to the most refined and cultivated taste.
