Fight with Pugachev's Troops, 19th century. Creator: Nikolay Nikolaevich Karazin
Fight with Pugachev's Troops, 19th century. One of 21 watercolors (out of an original 27) from an album relating to the history of the Siberian Cossacks held by the Rare Books Department of the Russian State Library in Moscow. The album was created as a gift for the future Tsar Nicholas II (1868-1918, reigned 1895-1917), Most August Ataman of All Cossack Voiskos (Commander of all Cossack troops, a title bestowed by Nicholas I), and presented to him in the summer of 1891 on his return to Saint Petersburg through Siberia from a trip to the Russian Far East. The theme of the album is Cossack history east of the Ural Mountains, beginning with the victory of the Cossack hetman (or ataman) Ermak Timofeevich (died 1585) over Khan Kuchum in 1582 and continuing with subjects from more than three centuries of Russian history

EDITORS COMMENTS
This watercolor print, titled "Fight with Pugachev's Troops," is a stunning creation by the Russian artist Nikolay Nikolaevich Karazin, dating back to the 19th century. The image is one of 21 watercolors from an album chronicling the rich history of the Siberian Cossacks, presented as a gift to Tsar Nicholas II in 1891 during his journey back to Saint Petersburg from a trip to the Russian Far East. The scene depicts a fierce skirmish between the Cossack forces and those of the rebellious leader Pugachev, who led a major uprising against the Russian rule in the late 18th century. The Cossacks, mounted on their horses and brandishing their weapons, charge forward with determination and courage, while Pugachev's troops, disorganized and falling back, struggle to defend themselves. The painting captures the raw energy and intensity of the battle, with the autumnal landscape serving as a striking backdrop. The artist's masterful use of color and detail brings the scene to life, transporting us back in time to witness this pivotal moment in Russian history. As part of the extensive Cossack history album, this work offers a unique glimpse into the heritage and traditions of the Cossack people, whose legacy continues to shape the cultural and military landscape of Russia to this day.
