EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the intensity of the 'Fight of the Buryats,' an event that took place during the passage of His Imperial Highness, Grand Duke Nikolai Alexandrovich of Russia, through Siberia in 1895. The Grand Duke was on a scientific expedition into the remote wilderness regions of East Siberia, and this image documents an unexpected encounter between the Buryat people and the expedition party. The photograph, taken by L. Veniukov, shows a group of Buryat men engaged in a competitive wrestling match, or 'khoroo,' under a canopy of trees. The grand duke and his entourage can be seen in the background, observing the spectacle from a distance. The Buryats, a Mongolian people inhabiting the region of Lake Baikal and the Selenga River, were known for their traditional sports and martial arts. This photograph is part of a collection of over two hundred images documenting the life of seven indigenous groups from East Siberia, including the Kets, Dolgans, Buryats, Yakuts, Even, Evenks, and Toffalars. The collection, housed at the Novosibirsk State Museum of Regional History and Folklife, provides a unique glimpse into the lives of these communities on the frontier of the Russian Empire in the late 19th century. The 'Fight of the Buryats' is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Siberian peoples and the meeting of different worlds during the era of imperial expansion. The photograph's composition, with its contrasting elements of action and observation, encapsulates the spirit of exploration and discovery that characterized this period in Russian history.
