EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a momentous event known as "Festin a L Honneur du Soleil, le jour du grand Ramy" or Feast in honour of the Sun, the day of the great Ramy. Created by Bernard Picart in 1723, this illustration is part of his renowned work "Ceremonies et coutumes religieuses de tous les peuples du monde" (Religious Ceremonies and Customs of All the Peoples of the World). The image depicts an important religious ceremony called Inti Raymi, celebrated by the Incas to honor their god Inti during the winter solstice. Despite never leaving Europe himself, Picart relied on accounts from those who had witnessed such ceremonies firsthand. In this engraving, we witness indigenous people from Peru engaging in various activities related to this sacred festival. The scene showcases elements like animal sacrifice, cooking over a barbecue (bbq), and feasting together as a community. Picart's work marked a significant shift in European attitudes towards religious beliefs and sacred practices. By documenting customs from around the world with meticulous detail and respect for cultural diversity, he broadened horizons and fostered understanding between different civilizations. This historical artwork serves as both an ethnographic record and an artistic masterpiece that allows us to glimpse into ancient traditions that were once practiced by native peoples in America. It reminds us of our shared human heritage while highlighting the importance of preserving cultural knowledge for future generations.
