EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Fernando Wood, an influential American politician from the 19th century. Taken in the 1860s by renowned photographer Mathew Brady, this portrait showcases Wood's commanding presence and political prowess. Fernando Wood (1812-1881) held various positions of power throughout his career, serving as a United States congressman and twice as Mayor of New York City. However, it was his controversial stance during the American Civil War that defined him as a prominent figure in history. As a Copperhead - a northern Democrat opposed to the war - Wood proposed that New York secede from the Union to maintain its profitable cotton trade with the South. In this image, we see Wood seated confidently, exuding authority and determination. His piercing gaze suggests both intelligence and conviction in his beliefs. The monochrome backdrop adds depth to his character while emphasizing his importance within American politics. This rare photograph is part of James D Horan's collection titled "Mathew Brady Historian with a Camera" published in 1955. It serves as a reminder of an era filled with political turmoil and ideological divisions that shaped our nation's history. As we observe this remarkable portrait today, we are reminded of Fernando Wood's significant contributions to American politics and how he challenged conventional norms during one of America's most tumultuous periods.
