EDITORS COMMENTS
This print transports us back to the ancient city of Thebes in Egypt, specifically to the great Temple at Karnak. Taken in 1905 by renowned photographers Underwood & Underwood, this image showcases the famous colonnade that has stood for centuries as a testament to Egyptian architectural prowess. With a total of 132 columns, each built with drum-shaped sections and arranged in sixteen rows, this colonnade is an awe-inspiring sight. Standing at an impressive height of sixty-five feet, these columns feature intricately carved capitals that spread out majestically. It is said that it would take six men with outstretched arms just to span one of these sculptured shafts. However, despite its grandeur, time had taken its toll on this magnificent structure. In 1899, eleven columns succumbed to age and insecurity due to weakened foundations. This unfortunate event serves as a reminder of the fragility of even the most enduring monuments. The photograph itself was part of a series called "Egypt Through the Stereoscope" featuring text by James H Breasted - an esteemed historian specializing in ancient Egypt. This stereoscopic card offers viewers a unique glimpse into the past through three-dimensional imagery. As we gaze upon this monochrome masterpiece captured over a century ago, we are reminded not only of Egypt's rich history but also our own fleeting existence within it.
